Are you using your space efficiently? Is there room to grow at your business?
When you’re going to open a business, think about where you see growth in the next 5 years. Do you hope to grow your business, or offer new or different services? Will there be room for this growth? When you’re going to find the perfect location for your business, it’s better to opt for more space than you think you’ll need.
Let’s say you’re in retail. You’re thinking you’ll be selling clothing, and you’ll need XXX amount of space to not be too crowded. Do you think in the future you’ll want to add shoes, purses or maybe a jewelry section. To add this new section, are you willing to cut into the space that you all ready had set aside for clothing retail? Or did you plan ahead, and know that 1/4 of the floor plan layout will be used for other purposes down the road?
The idea may be in your head, but have you actually sat down and just drawn out how you see your floor plan, or how you may make room for growth? It’s simple steps like these that will have you not only thinking about now, but the future.
When you go into business, if you only think about today, you may run into a problem tomorrow. Know where you want to go, and think about your space, and the space you’ll want over the next five years. That small cute boutique may work for the first few months, but when it comes time to expand, where is the room?
