Overextending Yourself Both Personally and Financially

overextend.png
I know a woman who constantly overextends herself. She does it all, and the problem comes along when she finally wears down and needs a breather. Everything falls apart. If she does it all, who is going to do it when she can’t?

It’s admirable to carry a wide load, but it’s not good business sense to only rely on yourself. What happens when you’re sick. Does business continue as usual, or does everything stop? Your business should be able to continue operating with a reasonable amount of ability with or without you for a few days. If not, you need to back up and re look at what you’re going to do if something comes up that pulls you out of the game for a few weeks. Would your business shut down and close, or would you have back up plan?

Another way people overextend themselves is with finances. It’s easy to get caught up int the justification of “I need it for my business”, but do you really? Can you get by with what you have? Can you be creative? Putting out too much income, without a means to pay it off quickly means your business is going to continue to carry debt.

Sometimes purchases we make weren’t as vital as we thought they may be. Stop and think before adding something new to your business. How will you use the product, how often, and what benefits will it bring. Would you be able to operate without it? Trust yourself, and don’t overspend. It’s easy to do. Take a look at your records before making all those purchases. Even a lot of small purchases add up to a lot of money.

Stop! Take inventory of your needs, and move forward from there. When we overextend ourselves both personally, professionally or financially, it’s never a winning combination.

Label That Item!

An efficient and economical way to keep things organized is by adding a label maker to your list of business equipment. It’s a great way to note inventory, mark slight differences, or add information to a product. Based on your needs, there are different varieties of label makers. Be sure to check the features on each unit.

Do you need to bar code items? It’s so much easy with a label maker, but make sure when comparing styles, you get one that works with bar codes, as not all varieties do. You may also need dates on specific items, and not all labelers add dates so be sure to find the features of each unit, so you can hone in on one that will make the most sense for your business.

I like efficiency, and being organized helps with that. When you’re looking for solutions, consider mailing solutions that allows you to weigh, stamp and address your packages and mail to ship out. By doing this at your place of business, you save time and energy by not having to go outside of your business to do this simple process. It just makes sense to do some of these simple tasks at your business, rather than running around taking care of these errands.

Franchising Opportunities May Offer You a Solution

Many people starting out know they want to go into business, but they aren’t sure how to get there. One avenue you may want to look at is franchising. If you’re looking for Franchise Opportunities, you may want to check RedHotFranchises.com for a list of businesses. I’m perusing through their site right now, and to give you a couple of examples, they have information about a sandwich shop, a fitness franchise, along with a beauty franchise. That’s just a drop in the bucket, because they have a ton of choices to look through.

One of the things I like about this site, is that they lay out the information you want right out front. How much of an investment is needed, what type of investment is needed, and how much needs to be liquid assets. You can also see how many units are all ready operating and when they went into business. It’s a quick snapshot view of the important details! They also offer a thorough run down of the business, along with an easy to use contact for more information. What type of business are you interested in?

How Will You Grow Your Small Business?

growth.png

Growing your business

If your a business, and you’re trying to find a way to increase your bottom line, there are 4 things to look at.

1. Do things more efficiently
2. Expand your product or service line
3. Target a new market
4. Increase your price, or limit your size

The first is finding a more efficient way to do something. Let’s look at a massive company like Ford who is speaking of consolidating some of their dealers. You’ll find fewer Ford dealers in a neighborhood, and in return, they cut out extra costs.

Another way to grow business is by creating a new service or product. A large company like McDonald’s could create a new product like McNachos or McO’s (onion rings). By offering yet another product, you may find more income from people who normally skip the fries, but like something different. If you offer a service like housecleaning, maybe you start offering a new service such as steam cleaning carpets at an extra cost.

Targeting a new market is another way to increase your bottom line. If you sell and market trendy bags to 20-30’s female clients, why not market to a little bit older client, showing benefits of a trendier bag. Staying current, hip and young is as simple as adding a trendy bag to your fashion wardrobe.

Increasing your price or cutting back on product size is something you’ll see in the grocery store often. Cereal may stay the same price, but if you look closely, maybe they’re offering 20 ounces in their box in place of 22 ounces. You may not have noticed because the price remained the same. I noticed it on a bottle of ibuprofen type product. I noticed the bottle remained the same size, but there were now 2 less then what they used to put in it. If I had just grabbed it off the shelf without looking, I may not have noticed. That’s what a company is banking on! We’re creatures of habit.

What will you do to grow your business?

What about Emergency Services?

I have a friend who has a small business that does billing for emergency services. He fell into it naturally after he was the Chief at a rescue squad for years, and took on the job there. It evolved into a business on his own, and he’s successfully run that business for quite a few years.

I spent some time with a rescue squad as an EMT, and also spent 2 years as a 911 operator awhile back. I loved being involved with a rescue squad, and the satisfaction was overwhelming at times. To know that you helped people in need was a great feeling. It’s never boring, because every call you respond to is something different, a different situation and different people.

Many people ask how you can do jobs like this, and it’s hard to explain that your professional manner just comes over you when you see bad situations. You’re doing a job, and you have focus. Your focus is on helping people.

The National Paramedic Institute offers online EMT training, and many more classes for continuing education. If you’re looking to expand your learning process or need CEUs, you may want to check them out. The offer AIDS training, streaming video along with so many other courses for First Responders, EMTs and Paramedics. Be sure to check out their full line of courses. Being able to get online CEUs can really help you save time, while getting the valuable information that you need.

Be sure to check out the section which shows what magazines had to say about them. There’s one article in particular I want you to pay attention to. In EMS Magazine, a 23 year veteran EMT and Paramedic speaks to you. Take it from someone who works the career and in the field to show you if you can still learn from an online CEU class. Let’s face it, when you have a case based incident, it helps you understand what needs to be done at the right time. When you’re in the EMS field, time is critical!

It is a very plain and simple website, so don’t judge it based on that. It’s a site that offers information that you can USE! Looking at their site with a designer’s eye, I hope they do brush it up just a bit, because people will judge them based on their simple design. They are offering important information if you’re in the EMS field.

Do You Have a Plan?

list.png

You’re thinking of starting a business, but you aren’t sure what details you’ll need to worry about. You know what you want your store or business to actually look like, but what about the financial details? When you’re at this beginning stage of going into business, it’s crucial that you create a business plan. It gives you a clear idea of which way you’re headed, along with a plan on how you’re getting there! It’s a map of your business!

If you’re looking for outside financing, then you’ll absolutely need a business plan. A bank isn’t going to lend you money without one! They want to know not only what you’re going to do with the money, but how do you intend on paying it back? You need to anticipate your needs, and look not only at the current circumstances, but also what the distant future will be. Just saying, I intend to do well doesn’t cut it! You need to really take a hard look at all the tiny bits and pieces of business.

Besides the financial side of it, what about details of employees, management issues, marketing, insurance and other details? This helps you cover all bases, so that you don’t leave out something with a simple “Oops!”. It’s a realistic look at your business plans from the tiniest details to the big important financial ones. What type of liability is involved, will you need licensing?

Just like in the real world, you need to prove to the bank you’re a good credit risk. Let’s face it, you’re asking for their money, and they want to know you’ll be able to pay it back!

Look for business plan templates for guidelines on what a business plan should include. SCORE.org is a great place to start.

Team Players Boost Morale

A great way to emphasize team work in the workplace is to take on a project like fund raising. Consider walking in a charity walk for MS, cancer or other causes. By working as a team to raise funds, it helps glue you together, along with helping a great cause. Team players have great morale.

The question is how do you handle a fund raiser? There are companies like ARC Marketing, that help you by providing you with fund raising products. You then turn around and sell these products at an increased cost, with the money going to your charity of choice. Car magnets, along with custom silicone bracelets are popular choices. For instance, I’m currently raising funds for breast cancer. This is something I can look into, to help when I have a charity yard sale. I’ll be able to not only sell regular items, but offer car magnets promoting breast cancer support.

If you’re a school, you can also use these means to help support things like your cheerleading team, your soccer team, or other clubs where you need to raise money. Churches also use fund raising products to help raise money.

Now that you have an idea, what can you do in your business to help bring together team work, increase morale and help a good cause?

If you’d like more details on fund raising supplies, ARC Marketing, Inc is located at ARCMKTG.com. I like that they put their pricing information out there, so you aren’t left questioning your costs. Also they offer free samples, so you can see the quality of their products.

Don’t Discount Your Prices, Add Value Instead

It’s so easy to believe you have to cut prices to bring customers in for value. Why not offer them something above and beyond, and keep those prices in tact? When you discount your goods, you’re changing how your customer now perceives the value of the product or service you’re offering.

When you add value, you say my price is fair, and I’m offering you something extra. Did you know that women will flock to cosmetic counters when you add a free item like a lipstick with purchase. That’s right, because it’s something “free”, and that perceived value means that they feel like they’re getting a good deal.

You can also do that. Think about what you can offer extra. What business are you in? What wouldn’t cost you a lot to add in for incentive? If you offer car washes, can you throw in a free tire scrub with special cleanser? If you’re a spa, can you throw in a free eyebrow wax with a facial? Maybe you’re a printing company, and printing out an extra 50 business card would only cost you pennies. To a client who is looking for value, offering those extras increases their appreciation of your service.

Medical Emergencies in the Workplace

Are you a small business owner? Do you have employees? Do you know what to do in a medical emergency?

I have Diabetes, but I don’t wear a shirt telling the world that I do. Would you know to check for emergency medical ID information if an employee became unconscious? Companies like AmericanMedical-ID.com offer identifiers in the form of jewelry that can give you valuable information. If you have employees, it wouldn’t hurt to take a first aid course, as well as teaching other employees basic ways to respond in an emergency.

When it comes to medical emergencies, time can be of the essence.

If your personally looking for medical identification jewelry, you can find both Child Medical Alert jewelry and adult choices. Safety first!

Don’t forget to keep a first aid kit handy, and make sure everyone at the office knows where it is!

Where’s the Traffic?

traffic.png

You’ve created a website, and you sit wondering where your traffic is. Just because you put something on the web, there’s not going to be a mad rush. Sorry to burst your bubble. You need to work for it. First off, if you’re a small business, you NEED a web presence. If you don’t know how to create one, hire somebody to do it for you. It will be worth its weight in gold. It will be an outlet to talk to customers about what’s going on with your business, and quite honestly, I rarely deal with companies that don’t have a web presence. A lot of people check a company out online before dealing with them. You don’t need a flashy, fancy website. A simple site, that’s got good content and information your customers will be looking for is more important than flash! People want information, plain and simple.
Now that you have a website, you need to work on building traffic to it. While some people will find it by looking specifically for you, others won’t know where to look. New people means new growth to your business. If you have retail on line, you can’t sell without customers!

If you’re going to have somebody build your website, it’s important that they understand what SEO is. Search Engine Optimization is going to help you get noticed. That means when somebody searched for your website in a search engine like Google or Yahoo! they’ll actually find you. This is one way you can climb over your competition. They may or may not have a website, and it may or may not be optimized. More traffic means you’ll have a better chance of converting those people into buying customers.

The internet is changes often and quickly, and it’s important to hire someone who understands this and stays current. Strong content is the key, but there are other factors when creating a website that will bring you to the top. Those top positions in a search engine can mean a heck of a lot more traffic than sitting in position 13 or 14! Yes, it can make that much difference.
As much as you want to optimize your site, it’s important it’s a natural build. This way the search engines trust this build more. Find a company that knows the language, and can show you what they’ve done for other clients. Don’t just take their word for it, get references and call and ask. Let their experience help your website get seen.
